Overview
About 500 young people from 32 countries are hosted in New Zealand each year as part of AFS programmes. The visitors, who are aged between 16 and 18, pay to come and study for up to a year. AFS hosts are volunteers, unlike those who provide homestays for fee- paying students. Wellington High School dean of international students Julia Beresford said about two weeks ago AFS asked it and other schools to either destroy or return an information pamphlet about hosting an AFS student. Schools were told part of the material could bring the organisation into disrepute. There was speculation among staff about the reasons for the withdrawal, she said. However, AFS was regarded as a competent and well-run organisation.
