Overview
[Rob Bayne], who worked on the Bayne family farm in Shropshire, was a domestic dog signed up to fight following an appeal from the War Office in 1942. Able seaman Simon was the ship's cat on the Royal Navy frigate HMS Amethyst. He won a PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) Dickin medal - the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross - and even received hundreds of letters of fan mail. The Amethyst spent three months caught in the Yangtze River during the civil war between Mao Tse-Tung's Communists and the Nationalists under Chiang Kaishek in 1949.
