Overview
On Oct. 6, [Nadia Matos] made her way from Timmins in N. Ontario to speak to a small crowd of journalism students about her experiences as a television broadcaster. \"Everybody's trying to out scoop each other,\" she says in reference to working in a small town. According to Matos, young journalists must often travel away from their home center to get their start. This could mean traveling up north as Matos has or going out west to places like British Columbia. So then, what is it like when you break into the business and get your start? \"I've been scared and happy and afraid!\" exclaimed Matos. While you might think this lecture could have been discouraging to students who are just starting out in the field of journalism, it was in fact quite the opposite. Nadia Matos was truly personable and laid back, she put everyone in the room at ease and that is what a good journalist should be able to do. Her final words of inspiration to the students, \"if you don't have a passion for it, if you don't really want it, it's not worth it.\" Brantford City Councillor [John Starkey] took a more traditional approach in his guest lecture to students Oct. 17. Delivering a speech laden with quotes from 1938 journalist Henry Wickham Steed, Starkey challenged students to live up to his ideal portrait of a journalist.
