Overview
[Patsy Byers] was paralysed from the neck down. She died two years later. Now her family is seeking $20 million to $30 million in damages - from filmmaker Oliver Stone and media giant Time Warner. They say [Sarah Edmondson] and her boyfriend were inspired by Stone's Natural Born Killers, a film they had watched repeatedly and obsessively. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a decision by the Court of Appeal of Louisiana, giving the Byers the right to sue Stone and Time Warner, despite the free speech protections of the First Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Yes, Natural Born Killers is violent and provocative. It's also a brilliant send-up of the American cult of violence and the American cult of celebrity. I'm not a huge Oliver Stone fan - he's too overwrought for me - but he's a legitimate director and Natural Born Killers is his best work.
