Overview
Comedy-drama from Georgia set in the former Soviet Union where carefree, precocious, 14-year-old nymphette Sybill joins a sleepy community to spend her summer holiday with her aunt. She falls in love with 41-year-old widower Alexander. His 14-year-old son Mickey is obsessed with Sybill, who takes to him when Alexander deflects her and promises him 100 kisses during summer. The sense of whimsy is a bit overdone as provocative Sybill stirs the town. Relishing his role and directed by Steven Soderbergh, George Clooney is well-worn bank robber George Foley, caught and jailed after an audacious plot fails. The story involves Foley's spell in prison, a fortune in uncut diamonds, his faithful pal (Ving Rhames) and the dangerous Don Cheadle. The powerhouse thrust driving the narrative is sexy, complex Jennifer Lopez as an FBI marshal kidnapped by Foley. Rewarding and informative account of a Jewish family's traumatic saga of survival in foreign, albeit friendly, Kenya on a remote farm. Juxtaposed with the Holocaust and set in 1938, accountant Walter Redlich (Merab Ninidze) leaves Germany and establishes himself in Kenya. His socially oriented wife Jettel receives a letter from him directing her and their young daughter Regina (Lea Kurka) to join him quickly. They leave much loved families who believe they will be safe under the Nazis. In a remote, dry and harsh area, Walter and Jettel have a long, hard haul. Not so Regina who makes friends with farmhand Owuor (a superb Sidede Onyulo) and is the catalyst for an emotional journey of learning.
