Overview
WHAT: Long before the first crack of lightning, these thrillseekers will have watched the storm develop through online weather reports, and taken phone calls from regional observers. Such is their enthusiasm, members have been known to drive 1500km in pursuit of the storm clouds. This is a great time of year to spot water spouts, which are tornados out at sea. They look like grey towers between sea and sky. But the most violent weather comes during summer, when hot and cold air clash to bring spectacular tropical storms. Hot spots in Sydney are the Northern Beaches, an area geographically a little higher than the rest of the city. Other prime locations are the south-western suburbs such as Campbelltown, Liverpool and Bankstown, as well as the Hunter Valley and Richmond areas. Storm-chasing can be dangerous, according to the association's NSW representative Keith Barnett, 58. \"You can get into danger quite easily,\" he says.
