Overview
Mr Ahern, son of former chief steward Jim Ahern, has been a race starter for 24 years and the industry's senior starter since 1985. Racing Victoria media manager Terry Clifton said yesterday that VATC starter Doug McLure would act as official starter at Flemington on all four days of the spring carnival. Mr Ahern's job as the industry's senior starter involves starting races on metropolitan and country tracks at an average of four meetings a week.
