Overview
Essendon skipper David Tate won the toss and sent the Lions in. With hindsight, that might not have been the wisest decision. Openers Rob Bartlett and Chris Reidy has no problems against the new ball and got the Lions off to a great start with a 156-run partnership, before Victorian paceman Mathew Inness had Reidy caught for 66. In perfect batting conditions at Schramms Reserve, the Lions' top five all got among the runs, Bartlett top-scoring with a magnificent 115.
