Overview
Maria Tomasini received a two-way radio call from one of the fishermen, her nephew, asking her to alert authorities to the whales' plight 15km east of Bremer Bay, on Western Australia's south coast. Whale beachings along WA's southern stretch of coast are not uncommon. A pod of 114 false killer whales were stranded at Augusta in 1986. On that occasion rescue efforts managed to return 96 to the sea. One of WA's biggest whale rescues came seven years ago when 500 volunteers spent hours at a beach near Dunsborough nursing a pod of 300 stranded long-finned pilot whales.
