Overview
Short of something that would bring his weekend to a complete and early halt - like the dreaded wheel-it-in-the-pits dead engine - Shawn Mathews might not mind if something bad happened Saturday during the preliminaries of the Yakima Speedway's 36th annual Apple Cup. Even in a no-holds-barred event like the Apple Cup, Mathews has learned a lesson or two about pushing too hard. Two years ago, he appeared well on his way to another Apple Cup victory when a wrong decision cost him the checkered flag. Mathews might be a bit more delicate this weekend while driving a car owned by Richard Berkta of Yakima's LP Body Shop. LP is owned by the family of frequent stock-car race Gary Poulson, who has a Late Model car that Mathews plans to race this summer.
