City man pleads guilty to sex-assault charges

Overview
A city man pleaded guilty recently in Lancaster County Court to sexually assaulting a mentally disabled woman for more than a year. Juan Jesus Vargas, 40, of 125 Juniata St., pleaded guilty Feb. 6 to two counts each of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault. Two additional counts of rape were withdrawn in return for the guilty plea because, Assistant District Attorney Jeff Conrad said he was unable to prove the elements needed for a conviction on those charges. Judge Paul K. Allison ordered a background investigation be completed before sentencing Vargas.
