Overview
At the Las Vegas world championships, three judges were employed. As each judged a lift, he turned on a light -- the white light signified the lift a good one, the red light meant the lift was not acceptable. Contestants had to see at least two of the three lights turned white for a lift to count. [Tim Bentley] achieved a squat lift of 755, a bench press of 485 and a dead lift of 661 for a meet total of 1,981 pounds. Those numbers were lower than his national title lifts, he said, because upon realizing the strictness of the judges, he lowered his weights to be sure he made qualifying lifts. Bentley at one time or another held 10 powerlifting world records. Five of those remain active, including the 601-pound bench press and 2,200 total lift he put together in the 40-44 age group at the world championships back in 1988, when he won his first world title.
