Overview
Samantha Massano was preparing to return for the fall semester at UW-Oshkosh as the hurricane swept through Louisiana and Mississippi. She was one of about 450 Wisconsin Guard members quickly mobilized to the hurricane-ravaged areas, and she has few regrets that her classes are going on without her. Massano, a member of the Oshkosh-based 1157th Transportation Company, and other soldiers at the Belle Chasse Naval Air Base outside New Orleans said emergencies like Hurricane Katrina are precisely why they signed up for service. [Patrick Sanford], also a member of the 132nd, left Friday on a convoy for a relief mission near New Orleans. Before leaving, he expressed no apprehension of getting a closer glimpse of the devastation [KATRINA] wreaked on the city.
