Overview
[Joe Kohn] is right: Pennsylvania's crime rate did rise faster than the nation's - 3.1 percent compared to 2.7 percent, according to the FBI's 1991 Uniform Crime Report. Kohn's ad implies that Preate's drug strike forces don't work. His 27-page strategy for fighting crime documents turf battles between Preate and county district attorneys over drug task force cases. But the task forces, increased from 10 to 54 during Preate's four years, have arrested more than 5,600 drug suspects. Kohn also implies that Preate is afraid to prosecute organized crime and political corruption. Preate's office has been involved in nearly a dozen mob-related drug cases, including a recent bust of Mafia-connected drug suspects in the Poconos. It is true that Preate has not prosecuted a ranking state official for corruption, but he has prosecuted county officials. Kohn's strategy calls for longer sentences for drug offenders, construction of new prisons and alternative methods for punishment.
