Overview
The latest incarnation of his quintet has performed as a unit for three years, although some members have been with [ROY HARGROVE] longer. The group comprises drummer Willie Jones III, alto saxophonist Sherman Irby, bassist Gerald Cannon and pianist Larry Willis. This is a working band; a rare, vanishing entity that hones its sound through the sweat of nightly gigs and shared vision. The sharpness of the band was evident from the first notes, with Hargrove and Irby taking turns stairstepping their way to the upper registers of their horns; this is a group that likes its sound loud and precise.
