Overview
\"The head of the family has been chopped off! What will we do?\" wailed a mourner, as Visne's family - led by his 8-year-old son, holding a floral wreath - carried the casket from the family's thatched-roof home to a simple concrete crypt in the backyard. Visne's pregnant wife, Wilande, sat distraught, while the man's brother, 20-year-old Gustave Visne, flailed in agony on the concrete floor, prompting relatives to whip him with branches in a practice Haitians say drives away spirits. For the Visne family, there is nowhere to turn. [Ronald Paul], the cousin of the dead patriarch, sat in his two-room Port-au-Prince home two days after the [Maniche] funeral, his baby daughter asleep on the concrete floor. He wondered how he will find a way to feed his own wife and four children as well as help Visne's widow. [Jean Elieser Visne] died in a vehicle collision during the recent chaos in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Above, a brother of Visne's wiped away tears during the seven-hour trip for the funeral. / GLOBE PHOTO / ESSDRAS M SUAREZ
