Overview
Sexual orientation has been added to race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age and mental or physical disability as grounds on which abusive comments cannot be made, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said. Ronald Kidd, a Toronto man who filed the initial complaint that led to the ruling, welcomed the news but said homosexuals would have to keep an eye on how the CRTC interprets any future abusive comments. Many comments could be abusive but not directly mention homosexuals, for example, he said. Kidd complained to the CRTC two years ago after watching an episode of Fatima: The Moment Has Come on CHCH-TV Hamilton. Vision TV, the religious specialty cable channel, also carried the show which said AIDS is a punishment from God and that sacred scriptures say homosexuality is a crime that calls to heaven for vengeance.
