Overview
Last night's homage featured an all-star cast of trumpeter Roy Hargrove, guitarist Russell Malone, saxist/flautist Frank Wess, clarinettist Paquito D'Rivera and vocalist Roberta Gambarini, who took turns in the spotlight. They used two different bands, Hargrove's quintet and a lineup of New York drummer Jake Hanna, local bassist Neil Swainson and Denver pianist Eric Gunnison. Between firebrand Hargrove, virtuosic D'Rivera and the fragility of Wess's flute, it was one big highlight reel of tunes such as \"Somewhere Over the Rainbow,\" \"Donna Lee\" and \"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.\" Things really cooked, though, when all were onstage for the last third of the 21/2-hour show, occasionally getting in each other's way but finding a musically creative out.
