Overview
It was a good week overall for Candace Lankford. On Thursday, she was installed as president of the Florida School Boards Association. A day later, she won re-election to a third term when no one qualified to challenge her for the District 1 seat representing DeLand and Northwest Volusia. \"I was very surprised I did not have opposition,\" said Lank- ford, who also ran unopposed four years ago. \"I think it's a combination of good fortune and hard work.\" District 3 School Board incumbent Stan Schmidt wasn't as lucky, picking up a previously unannounced second challenger on the last day of qualifying. She is Sharon Luebbers of New Smyrna Beach, who will face off with Schmidt and Maredy Hanford, both of Port Orange, in an Aug. 24 primary in Southeast Volusia. A runoff will be scheduled Nov. 2 if no one gets more than half the primary vote. The District 3 race was set to elect a new council member as well, until [Alexander] decided to file Thursday. She's running as a pseudo-incumbent for the seat Jack Hayman is vacating due to term limits against Ellen Darden, William Benedict, Deborah Denys, Roger Gray, George Trovato, and another political newcomer, John D'Hondt.
