Overview
Richard Ray Carnefix, 54, of Elkview was riding his motorcycle Sunday with a passenger, Darla Kay Hayes, 49, on Indian Creek Road near the Pinch Public Service District when he crashed into a ditch about 8:30 p.m., said Lt. Sean Crosier, a spokesman for the Kanawha Sheriff's Department. Carnefix and Hayes were thrown from the motorcycle. Deputy B.K. Howery, who was the first to arrive at the scene, found Carnefix dead at the scene. Lt. Leslie Givens with the South Charleston Fire Department said the affected air conditioning unit was in the school's basement causing the area to fill with smoke. The smoky air from the basement was then carried throughout the school by the air conditioner's duct system.
