\"Here is what SRD decided, and I'll just tell you but I can't speak for their decision. The decision was to defend in place,\" said Slave Lake Councillor Rob Irwin, speaking to Slave Lake residents at Westlock Memorial Hall on Thursday, May 19. \"What SRD's concern was, if they put out a two-hour evacuation to send people out on the highway, they felt that would cause panic and put people out on the highway and we would have lost lives on the highway.\" At the Westlock Centre, Irwin said, \"Normally in an evacuation we would have the fire department knock on doors.
