Overview
More recently, they added a barre class, Flybarre, for those who want spinning and body sculpting under one roof. \"We came up with a different product,\" [Ruth Zukerman] said. Success came early. Opened in February 2010, Flywheel's first location on W. 21st St. was an instant hit. Within a month Zukerman and [Jay Galluzzo] opened a second studio at the JCC on the Upper West Side. Flywheel broke into the black on an operating basis in its first year. A year ago, Zukerman and Galluzzo beat SoulCycle to the punch, snapping up another small cycling chain that gave them two more locations. \"Our performance so exceeded our expectations that we accelerated our growth,\" said Galluzzo, who earlier in his career was a corporate lawyer who helped engineer a turnaround at apparel company Warnaco. [Katie Couric] called Zukerman - her instructor and friend - a \"rock star.\" \"Some of the riders are intense, like mini-Lance Armstrongs, but I'm upping my numbers every day!\" Couric said of her Flywheel classes. Beth Rosenberg, a 34-year-old pediatrician who lives in Tribeca, has been spinning at the Flatiron Flywheel since July.
