En 1977, cuando el nombre de Nixon era el símbolo de la corrupción política, David Frost, un presentador de televisión Británica, especializado en entretenimiento y considerado por sus críticos como un estereotipo de la frivolidad mediática, se le midió al reto de proponerle al ex presidente una entrevista televisada con el objetivo de responder los interrogantes de millones de personas. Nixón, como lo indicó en su libro, In the Arena, aceptó el reto por la necesidad de cubrir sus millonarios gastos de abogados, pues Frost ofreció la no despreciable suma de 540 mil dólares. Las reglas de juego fueron estrictas. Se realizarían 28 horas de grabación en un período de 12 días y solo el 25 por ciento de las preguntas se referirían al escándalo Watergate. Así mismo, Nixon no conocería las preguntas ni tampoco podría ver las entrevistas antes de su divulgación pública.
