BRISBANE, Dec 9 AAP - Australian Surf Life Saving Championships officials brushed aside warnings about dangerous conditions at a Gold Coast beach hours before a competitor was killed, an inquest has heard. The lifeguard made a note of the conversation to \"cover himself\" but couldn't recall the officials' names, he said. Under cross-examination by Surf Life Saving Australia's barrister, Mr [Dean Powell] said he hadn't closed the beach to the public because swimmers were staying close to shore.
