BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Exabyte Corporation (Nasdaq: EXBT), a performance leader in network storage, today announced it has finalized an agreement with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (MEI) of Osaka, Japan, under which MEI will be the primary supplier of SmartClean(TM) AME (Advanced Metal Evaporated) cartridges for Exabyte's new Mammoth-2 (M2) tape drive. MEI's thin media, used in consumer applications, incorporates Exabyte's SmartClean technology to support the high capacity and reliability of M2. \"Utilizing consumer-based media provides users a great economic advantage on their media investment over the long term,\" said Ken Cruden, director of marketing at Exabyte. \"MEI has been in volume production for more than 18 months, supplying the market with this media, so we are assured of a significant supply to meet the high demand forecasted for M2 drives and libraries. Because MEI has worked with our development team since the beginning, Exabyte's SmartClean technology is incorporated in the cartridge configuration adding to the M2's robust reliability.\" To become a source for Exabyte media, MEI had to achieve additional performance and process requirements. Exabyte requires tests on parameters beyond normal consumer requirements, and a certification process to ensure system performance in M2. Upon completion of all requirements, the tape cartridge receives the Exabyte Recognition Systems logo to identify this certification for our customers.
