Overview
A classic example was when the Iranian deputy minister of agriculture and other officials visited South Africa a few years ago, accompanied by a technical team, [John Sunde] said. Until then Iran had no ostrich farming industry. They toured an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn and were given a copy of its booklet. Iran would also dearly love to buy anything military from South Africa, Sunde said. \"They've told us they would buy as many Rooivalk helicopters that we would care to sell them. Obviously because of the American's Iran/Libya Sanctions Act we can't do that.\" South Africa imported mostly crude oil from Iran, totalling 9bn rands in 2001, while its main export to that country was sugar, totalling 471m rands. \"They want to buy wheat from us but we don't have enough to sell them,\" Sunde said.
