Overview
[John Danforth], a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, also said religious leaders must play a bigger role in ending a war that is rooted deeply in religion. He added that he would not endorse a pullout of U.S. troops because of the power vacuum it would create. \"I think that we've got a sectarian war going on in Iraq and that it's very, very dangerous. For 1,400 years, the Sunnis and the Shiites have been fighting each other, and they hate each other. And this is something that now is totally breaking out in Iraq and it relates to the Islamic world beyond the borders of Iraq,\" said Danforth. As an Episcopal priest as well as a politician with global experience, Danforth speaks with authority about both religion and public policy. His assessment of Iraq was similar to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's assertion last week that Iraq is in danger of sliding into full-scale civil war.
