Overview
He will turn 28 and also becomes an unrestricted free agent March 2, but the chance of other teams bidding for his services greatly decreased because of the Eagles' decision. Under the NFL's franchise tag rules, the Eagles now have seven days to match any contract offer [Corey Simon] receives from another team during the free-agency period. If they choose not to match the offer, the Eagles would receive two first-round draft choices as compensation for losing Simon. Simon is the first Eagles player to receive the franchise tag since linebacker Jeremiah Trotter in 2002. Trotter and his agent fought the Eagles' decision, and the team eventually removed the franchise tag, allowing the linebacker to sign with the Washington Redskins. Simon, through a team spokesman, declined to comment on the Eagles' decision on Thursday night, and [Roosevelt Barnes] did not return a phone call. A league source said Simon was not upset by the decision.
