Overview
Deputy Shawn Mathews, 35, of Fairmont, was on routine patrol traveling north on I-79 when he struck a deer in the passing lane, said Trooper E.M. Boyle, with the State Police detachment in Fairmont. Boyle said he's not sure if the deer was standing in the interstate or if it jumped out in front of the Dodge Durango patrol cruiser that Mathews drove. He said he does not know if Mathews was wearing a seat belt or how fast he was going, as the accident remains under investigation.Boyle said hitting a deer on the interstate while driving the speed limit (in some areas up to 70 mph) is comparable to hitting a brick wall.\"I've seen 150-pound deer destroy vehicles that are smaller than SUVs,\" he said.\"You always have to watch out for deer on West Virginia roads. One could jump across the road at any time. And always keep your seat belt on.\"
