Overview
Dec. 15--OWLS HEAD, Maine -- Knox County business and government leaders scrambled Tuesday to find a way to continue air service to Vinalhaven, North Haven, Matinicus, Islesboro and Swans islands after Maine Atlantic Aviation announced Monday it was discontinuing its flights. Summer residents wanting to skip the ferry and get to their island house for a weekend getaway, or year-round residents needing to get to an off-island appointment and return home the same day would call Maine Atlantic, [Jeff Northgraves] said, and book a chartered flight. Northgraves said a temporary -- and possibly long-term -- fix is in the works. Kevin Waters, Maine Atlantic's chief pilot, wants to take over the flight service but first must secure aircraft, FAA approval and insurance coverage. Those are no small tasks, he said.
