Overview
In this chapter, we argue that it is critical for urban design education to engage with the concepts of density, mix, access, public/private interface, and type, and further discuss how these key concepts can be incorporated in urban design education. We begin from the view that sustaining place transformations is geared to a sophisticated understanding of these key concepts and the complex relationships between them across multiple scales. The main question here is about how learning and teaching of these concepts can be incorporated in urban design education. We first reflect on urban design as a field in the process of becoming with multiple pedagogies. Following a brief discussion of these key urban design concepts, we draw on our experience of teaching the Urban Design Foundation module as a part of the MA (Masters) Urban Design program at Cardiff University to discuss how these key concepts can be incorporated in urban design education.
