من أهم كتب الدكتور أحمد محمود الخليل، كتاب سلس ودسم، بعنوان «حضارات الشرق القديم في ذاكرة كبار الرحالة»، والصادر حديثا عن منشورات مركز سلطان بن زايد في أبوظبي، في 259 صفحة من القطع الكبير، يعرض فيه عبر مقدمة وثمانية فصول، لوحات من ثقافات وحضارات الشرق القديم حسبما دونها بعض كبار الرحالة في الشرق والغرب، على امتداد نحو 23 قرنا، بدءا من القرن (5 ق. م) مع الرحالة الإغريقي هيرودوت، وانتهاء بمنتصف القرن (19 م) مع الرحالة الفرنسي لا مارتين، وتمتد جغرافيا الرحلات من الصين شرقا، ومرورا بآسيا الوسطى والهند وبلاد فارس وكردستان والعراق، والجزيرة العربية والأناضول وسوريا ولبنان وفلسطين وإلى مصر غربا، وروايات هؤلاء الرحالة تجمع بين الواقعية والعفوية والجاذبية، وفيها تبدو الشعوب والأمم على حقيقتها دون تجميل أو تشويه، وفيها أيضا تتجاوز الثقافات والحضارات عبر الأزمنة والأمكنة.
