يحكي الكتب عن حمير قبيلة كان لها في غابرها لسان وخط فأمحي الخط بطلوع الإسلام وعيب اللسان وتحوميت عربيّته يوم دونت اللغة من فلق أفواه من يحتج بعربيتهم وغير أن كثرة ما نحل علي قدماء حمير من أشعار ليس بها أدني مأئة بأولئك، حمل العلماء علي حشر هذه الأشعار في صعيد واحد مع ما نسب إلي عاد وثمود وقد سعيت إلي جمع أشعار حمير في الجاهلية والإسلام ودراستها.
