كانت أعمال الرافعي مقصورة على الشعر والعناية به، قبل أن يقرر ترك منظوم الكلام ويتجه نحو منثوره، فقد حاد الرافعي عن مذهبه المعهود، وشرع في طريق التأليف والكتابة، وكان الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو بداية هذا التحول، ورغم حداثة عهده بالكتابة البحثية العلمية إلا أنه أخرج لنا عملًا تاريخيا ونقديا رصينا، يعده النقاد أحد أكبر المراجع في حقله. ومما يدعو للذهول والإعجاب أن كتابًا بهذه المنزلة قد ألفه الرافعي وهو بعد شابا في الثلاثين من عمره، وهذا يدل على ما اجتمع للشاب من حكمة وحصافة لا يبلغها في العادة إلا الكبار.
