قسم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أبواب في كل باب فصلان، إضافة إلى خاتمة وملحق للصور، في الباب الأول استعرض الباحث بدايات المسرح السوداني مبينا الدور الكبير الذي لعبته المدارس باحتضانها هذا الفن الوافد على الثقافة السودانية، إذ ان أول نشاط مسرحي منظم شهدته مدرسة رفاعة في 1903 وذهب ريعه لتأهيل مباني المدرسة بحسب ما ذكر الشيخ بابكر بدري (1861-1954) في كتابه \"حياتي\" و\"المسرح السوداني الفصيح\" هو عنوان الباب الثاني ويعرض خلاله الباحث للنصوص المسرحية التي كتبت باللغة العربية الفصحى والباب الثالث خصصه الباحث للمسرح الشعبي في السودان سواء اعتمد لغة عامية نثرية أو شعرية، وقرأ الباحث هنا مسرحيات مثل \"المك نمر\" لإبراهيم العبادي و\"تاجوج\" و\"خراب سوبا\" لخالد أبو الروس وسواها من النصوص التي كتبت في عشرينيات القرن الماضي إلا انها لا زالت تحتفظ بوهجها وبحظوتها في خشبة المسرح السوداني.
