لا مغالاة فى القول بأن لكثير من علماء الغرب من مستشرقين وغيرهم، يدا طولى في إبراز معالم تاريخ جزيرة العرب، وفي كشف ما خفي من آثارها، فضلا عما لهم من فضل في إحياء التراث الإسلامي، والشرقي، بوجه عام. ولقد تصدى لذلك منهم فئتان : فئة عنيت بنشر المؤلفات القديمة، ومنها ما يتعلق بتاريخ العرب وجغرافية بلادهم، نشرا يبلغ الغاية في تحقيق النصوص، وتقريب إدراكها بالتبويب والترتيب، ووضع الفهارس الكاملة، لمختلف موضوعات تلك النصوص، بحيث أصبح عملهم-في هذا المجال-مثالا يحتذى، في الجودة والدقة، وبلوغ ما يتوخى من نشر المؤلفات.
