يعد هذا الشرح ذخيرة أدبية، ووثيقة تراثية توثق العقد الشعري النفيس الذي تركه لنا بلبل الشعر العربي الفصيح في دوحة المشرق «المتنبي» وهو شرح واف أورد فيه الكاتب جميع تفاسير الشراح من متقدمين، ومتأخرين، وأقوال النقاد من متعصبين له، ومتعصبين ضده، وقد أكثر البرقوقي من إيراد الشواهد، والأشباه، والنظائر التي تعضد قيمة هذا الشرح إيمانا منه بقامة وقيمة المتنبي، وقد تبسط الكاتب في ذكر سيرة المتنبي ؛ ولا سيما ما كان منها عونا على معرفة الظروف والمناسبات التي أسهمت في ميلاد شعر هذا الشاعر الفذ، وأرفق بهذا الشرح تراجما لشراح المتنبي ممن ورد ذكرهم في هذا الشرح، وإتماما للفائدة جمع الكاتب الأمثال والحكم التي قالها المتنبي، وزيل بها هذا المؤلف ؛ ولا عجب في ذلك فهو شرح تلاقت فيه كل الشروح بعد شىء من التهذيب والتنقيح ؛ فجاء مفصلا لكل ما قاله المتنبي في كل بيت شعري فصيح.
