إن الغاية من وضع هذا الكتاب هو إيضاح المراحل التي مر بها النفوذ البريطاني في الخليج خلال القرن التاسع والأسس التي قام عليها هذا النفوذ، واتخاذ عام 1795 نقطة انطلاق لدراسة هذا النفوذ ليس لها اعتبارات خاصة، وكل ما في الأمر هو أنه لابد من اختيار مرحلة تاريخية من القرن الثامن عشر نبدأ بها دراسة منطقة الخليج من حيث تركيبات المجتمع والتجارة والسياسة قبل أن تتأثر تلك العوامل بمضاعفات الحملة الفرنسية على مصر والسياسة قبل أن تتأثر تلك العوامل بمضاعفات الحملة الفرنسية على مصر عام 1798 وبظهور الوهابيين على مسرح الأحداث في أواسط شبه الجزيرة العربية بعد مرور عام أو عامين منذ ذلك التاريخ.
