يعالج الكتاب العلاقة بين أوروبا وبالأخص إيطاليا ومصر وبلاد الشام أيام الحروب الصليبية ويشرح تأثير تلك العلاقات على التجارة ومرور البضائع ولا سيما التوابل من الهند ودول شرق آسيا إلى أوروبا. ويعطي تفاصيل دقيقة عن طبيعة العلاقات بين البندقية وجنوة وسلاطين المماليك وضرائب العبور التي كان على التجار الإيطاليين دفعها على بضائعهم. إن الكتاب الحالي محاولة جادة لإنصاف العرب وإعطائهم شيئا من حقهم الذي حاول بعض المؤرخين الأوروبيين طمسه من خلال بث ادعاءاتهم الكاذبة كما أنه عمل قيم يظهر لنا مدى التقدم الحضاري الذي ساد العالم الإسلامي حين كانت أوروبا تعيش عصور الظلام والاستبداد.
