علامة عربي مسلم برع في الفلك والفلسفة والكيمياء والفيزياء والطب والرياضيات والموسيقى وعلم النفس والمنطق الذي كان يعرف بعلم الكلام يعرف عند الغرب بأسم ويعد الكندي أول الفلاسفة المتجولين المسلمين كما اشتهر بجهوده في تعريف العرب والمسلمين بالفلسفة اليونانية القديمة والهلنستية عاش في البصرة في مطلع حياته ثم انتقل منها إلى بغداد حيث أقبل على العلوم والمعارف لينهل من معينها وذلك في فترة الإنارة العربية على عهد المأمون والمعتصم في جو مشحون بالتوتر العقائدي بسبب مشكلة خلق القرآن وسيطرة مذهب الاعتزال وذيوع التشيع، وكان القرن الثالث الهجري يموج بألوان شتى من المعارف القديمة والحديثة وذلك بتأثير حركة النقل والترجمة.
