في باب \"نزول القرآن على سبعة أحرف\" ساق الإمام ابن الجوزي الحديث التالي تحت عنوان \"القول الأول\"، أنبأنا عبد الله بن علي المغربي، أنبأنا عبد الواحد بن علوان، أنبأنا أحمد بن محمد، أنبأنا عبد الباقي بن قانع، حدثنا محمد بن العباس المؤدب، حدثنا سفيان وسعيد بن سليمان، أنبأنا الليث بن سعد، حدثنا عقيل عن الزهري عن أبي سلمة عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله \"صلى الله عليه وسلم\" قال لابن مسعود: (إن الكتب كانت تنزل من باب واحد على حرف واحد، وإن هذا القرآن نزل من سبعة أبواب على سبعة أحرف، حلال، وحرام، وأمر، وزجر، وضرب أمثال، ومحكم ومتشابه، فأحل حلال الله، وحرم حرامه، وافعل ما أمر الله، وانته عما نهى الله واعتبر بأمثاله، واعمل بمحكمه، وآمن بمتشابهه، وقل (كل من عند ربنا وما يذكر إلا أولوا الألباب)... وفي هذا سيكون بحثنا نرتبه وفقا لهذه الرواية، ونفصله تفصيلا.
