يتنقل أميتاف غوش الكاتب الهندي الحائز على جائزة شاهيتا الأدبية والمرشح لجائزة \"بوكر\" البريطانية، بين مصر وفلسطين، وذلك بعد أن قرأ في أثناء دراسته الجامعية في أوكسفورد، عن قصة بين عبد وسيد في القرن الثاني عشر، ثم تعلم اللغة العربية، وعاش في مصر، متتبعا قصة هذين الرجلين. وبالتالي يمزج كتاب في أرض قديمة\" بين القصة التاريخية تلك، العائدة إلى القرن الثاني عشر، وبين رحلة الكاتب نفسه إلى المنطقة العربية في القرن العشرين. يكتب غوش : \"خلال هذه الزوبعة من المخططات الكبيرة والأقدار التاريخية، يبدو أن رسالة خلف بن إسحاق فتحت بابا في شبكة واسعة من الحفر حيث تستمر الحياة الحقيقية من دون انقطاع.
