الكتاب يحتوي على المجاميع التي تشتمل على التاريخ والأدب والنوادر والأشعار، فهو موسوعة أدبية كبيرة لا يستغني عنها قارئ الأدب العربي، فالكتاب الأصلي 10 مجلدات لابن حمدون تم اختصاره بكتابين موسوعة ضخمة، تقع مطبوعتها في عشرة مجلدات، قال ابن خلكان : (من أحسن المجاميع، يشتمل على التاريخ والأدب والنوادر والأشعار، لم يجمع أحد من المتأخرين مثله، وهو مشهور بأيدي الناس كثير الوجود، وهو من الكتب الممتعة)، وفي مقدمة المؤلف قوله : (ونظمت فيه فريد النثر ودرره وضمنته مختار النظم ومحبره وأودعته غرر البلاغة وعيونها وأبكار القرائح وعونها وبدائع الحكم وفنونها وغرائب الأحاديث وشجونها)
