ترجع أهمية هذا الكتاب إلى كون مؤلفه مغربي من عملاء الاستعمار الفرنسي حتى أن المغاربة امتنعوا عن الصلاة في المكان الذي دفن فيه والكتاب يمثل من هذا المنظور وثيقة تاريخية وفكرية هامة إنه يقع في صميم ما ينعت بخطاب الاستشراق معكوسا كما يقترح صادق جلال العظم فهو يرى في الغرب دار السعادة القصوى ويحرص على استنساخ القيم الغربية وجعل الشعوب العربية تخجل من انتمائها الحضاري. تقدم هذه الرحلة مسحا لأجزاء كبيرة من فرنسا في فترة ما بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى وتثير أسئلة تنويرية ونهضوية ملتبسة ويتقدم الحجوي لهذا السبب بوصفه حالة رمزية لحيرة العالم العربي الإسلامي الخاضع للاستعمار.
