أصبح السفر والانتقال من بلد لآخر في زمننا هذا أمرا متاحا يسره التقدم الكبير في وسائل المواصلات، وكذلك ترحيب الحكومات بالسائحين؛ فتقاربت الشعوب وبدأ جليد الأحقاد في الذوبان. والكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ هو خلاصة أسفار ورحلات قام بها المؤلف لدول القارة الأوروبية (ما عدا روسيا) في منتصف القرن العشرين، فأبهرته طبيعتها الخلابة ولفت نظره ما عليه أهلها من نظام وحب للعمل، فنفضوا غبار معارك الحرب الهتلرية وأصموا الآذان عن دعوات الانتقام، وقرروا التفرغ لإعادة بناء ما هدمته آلة الحرب، فلما جنحوا للسلم وجهوا جل طاقاتهم لمجالات الصحة والتعليم وتنمية اقتصادهم المنهك، فظهرت النتائج سريعا ولمسها الكاتب بنفسه في أثناء زياراته لتلك الدول؛ حيث ارتفعت مستويات معيشة المواطن، كما أصبحت تلك البلاد قبلة سياحية عالمية.
