يتناول هذا الكتاب رحلة إلى أعالي النيل الأبيض 1839-1840 حيث أن النيل هو أعظم أنهار الدنيا ويبلغ طوله 6695 كيلو مترا ومنذ ما قبل التاريخ شغل هذا النهر الفاتحين والرحالة والمستكشفين من كل الأجناس وخلال القرنين الماضيين نشطت البعثات الاستكشافية الغربية في اتجاهه وحتى قيام بعثة الربان سليم قبطان وكان النيل الأبيض ما يزال غير مستكشف وبالتالي فإن ينابيع النيل ما برحت موضوع تطلع الشعوب كلها ومن هنا تأخذ هذه الرحلة أهميتها كرحلة علمية رائدة بنى على ما جاء فيها من ملاحظات ومعلومات وما خلصت إليه من معطيات.
