يتناول كتاب (دفاع عن حقوق المرأة) والتي قامت بتأليفه ماري ولستونكرافت في حوالي (400) صفحة من القطع المتوسط موضوع (حقوق المرأة) يعتبر هذا النص أول كتاب في تاريخ النسوية، ومع أن كلمتي (دفاع، وحقوق) قد تشيران بأن محتواه ينصب على المعنى الحقوقي أو القانوني ولكنه أوسع من ذلك بكثير، إذ أنه يخاطب ثقافة عصر في الفلسفة السياسية والأدب والتربية، هذا الميدان يشغل حيزا كبيرا في الكتاب، وربما يعكس عمل المؤلفة في الميدان التربوي، مربية ومعلمة وصاحبة مدرسة.
