تتفرد رواية (محمد الرطيان) ما تبقى من أوراق محمد الوطبان بجدتها وحداثة موضوعها واتساع رؤيتها وإتقانها للتركيب التجريبي، فهي ترسم أجواء سردية مختلفة ومبتكرة في نص بحميمية ودفء الخصوصية الملازم لكتابة الأوراق الشخصية بأسلوب بسيط ومرح، لكنه أسلوب ساخر ومرير. يطرح الرطيان موضوع غربة الذات بكثير من الصدق والجرأة وبلغة قوية وشفافة، لكن الذات تظهر متشظية ومتناقضة عبر مجموعة من الأقنعة السائرة، التي ترفع وتيرة التضاد بين الشخصية المحورية وشخصية الرقيب.
