تدور أحداث الرواية في العصور القديمة، حيث كانت \"العربية السعيدة\" تمثل الجزء الجنوبي الغربي من شبه جزيرة العرب؛ المكان الذي يسمى الآن؛ اليمن في عام 1761، أرسل الملك الدنماركي فريدريك الخامس بعثة تتألف من خمسة علماء وخادم واحد لاستكشافها، الرحلة التي استغرقت تقريبا سبع سنين منحت أول خيوط الاستكشافات التي لفتت الانتباه في عموم أوروبا، الشخص الوحيد الذي عاد من تلك الرحلة حيا كان العالم الفلكي كارستن نيبور. و\"العربية السعيدة\" عمل أساسي في الأدب الدنماركي، وهذا العمل حقق نجاحا كبيرا للكاتب ثوركيلد هانسن عند صدوره في عام 1962.
