هذه السلسلة من عمل ضخم يبحث في أحداث قضية كبيرة في تاريخ صدر الإسلام، ويتناول وقائع الفتنة الكبرى التي امتدت أحداثها في الفترة ما بين سنة 23 للهجرة (بداية حكم الخليفة عثمان) وسنة 41 للهجرة (سيطرة معاوية على مقاليد الحكم). إنه بحث وتنقيب في أمهات الكتب والمصادر الأصلية للتاريخ الإسلامي، ومقارنة بين الأخبار والروايات في المصادر المختلفة وتحليلها وملاحظة الاختلاف أو الاتفاق فيما بينها، وكل ذلك من أجل محاولة الوصول إلى الحقيقة التاريخية كما لا يتردد في الدخول إلى مناطق حساسة من تاريخ صدر الإسلام تتعلق بالعلاقات بين الكبار الصحابة ومواقفهم في مراحل مختلفة من مجريات الفتنة التي أدت إلى مقتل خليفة المسلمين على أيدي أفراد من رعيته من المسلمين.
